Engsö Castle

Legendary Engsö, mentioned as early as 1185, is among the most interesting of Sweden´s many castles and manor houses. A fortified stone building was built in the 1480´s and extended and embellished in the 1630´s. The manor house acquired its current appearance and interior in the 1740´s, when the architect Carl Hårleman created an elegant dwelling for Count Carl Fredrik Piper. The manor house, which acquired its current appearance and interior in the 1740´s was inhabitated until 1959.

Today, Engsö is a living museum, with its beautiful interiors from different centuries open to visitors. The interior has been left largely untouched, whilst works of art and the contents reflect different eras. There is a large collection of paintings, and the famous "Engsökedjan" gold chain. Engsö is renowned all over the world for its ghosts. The manor house´s kitchen serves home-made bread, waffles and light meals. Lunches and dinners can be booked in advance. The shop sells gifts and souvenirs. The Engsö Christmas market (first weekend of Advent), with craft workers from all over Sweden, is a cherished annual tradition.
